Food:

With Minato’s former chef Hatsushiro Muraoka (Papa San, as he’s known to fans) at the helm, you can bet your bottom dollar that the range of freshly made sushi is as expansive as it is phenomenal. Also available is an array of tempura, tofu and noodle dishes. Give the deep-fried tofu in hot tentsuyu sauce a try, or for something warming, indulge in a bowl of super-slippery udon noodles served in delicately flavoured, piping-hot broth. Desserts include several of Papa San’s home-made ice creams and sorbets that come in flavours such as pumpkin and soy-milk coconut.

Wine:

Start off the evening’s proceedings with a decanter of piping hot sake, before moving onto the small, but respectable, wine list that features wines by local estates such as Tokara and Kleine Zalze.

Service:

Waitrons are dressed from top to toe in black, and sport chic, bright red sashes. Service is fast, friendly and efficient without being obtrusive.

Ambience:

Slick and minimalist, diners are seated at bespoke black cubes in a wood- and brick-accented interior, and bathed in the glow of beautiful paper lanterns.

And...:

Make sure to read Papa San’s tongue-in-cheek house rules printed on the menu’s cover. You don’t want to get on his bad side! (AK, June 2011)

Really poor service, really arrogant manageress, average sushi (extra ginger because in Japan you are not served extra ginger...we were told), cold athmosphere. What a pit\y - my first time there was great, but clearly the endless clients have gone to Takumi's head.

- A sushi joint without a sushi bar

- Very small sashimi menu, embarrassingly small

- One brand of sake in a sushi joint. Really?

- Service that seems indifferent to your presence.

I adore Takumi! The best sushi in Cape Town!

My only criticism is that the food comes out far too fast, we were only half way through our miso soup the other night, when our 3 other plates of sushi arrived - only 10 minutess after we'd ordered them.

You end up feeling slightly rushed and you get the impression that the sushi was not made freshly but rather ready and waiting in the kitchen. A bit of breathing space between meals would be appreciated!

Also the ginger was dry and tasteless (and not enough of it).



Nonetheless, everything else was perfect, the sushi was delicious and we will be back soon!
